Shawn has lived in Bedford, Nova Scotia for over two decades with his wife, Greta who immigrated to Canada in the 1960s from England. In his spare time, Shawn plays guitar and banjo in the country and western fiddle band, The Wheelers. The Wheelers band members are a collection of lawyers from Brookshire Law Office, Teryl Scott Lawyers Inc, and Richardson’s Law Office – Shawn’s mother also joined the band and plays the piano. They began volunteering to perform in local nursing homes when Shawn’s father was admitted to White Hills Nursing Home. Shawn is also a history buff and is working on a book about Nova Scotia history in the 1700s.
Alan is widely published in the area of immigration law. He currently has published 17 scholarly articles on this topic and has written a textbook on Australian immigration law. He is licensed in Nova Scotia and has practiced immigration law in British Columbia, New York and his native home of Australia.
Daniel Wilband’s main focus is employment and human rights law. He has extensive experience with both non-unionized and unionized/collective agreement matters, constitutional law and complex human rights issues.
Daniel hails from the outskirts of Saint John, New Brunswick. He is fluently bilingual and his wife Michelle is Acadian from the same area. Daniel attended McGill University’s Faculty of Law, arguably Canada’s finest law school, graduating on the Dean’s Honour List in 2015. He completed his articles at a well-known law firm in Toronto that specializes in labour/employment, constitutional and human rights law, after which he served as a clerk to the judiciary at the prestigious Court of Appeal for Ontario. Prior to law school, Daniel obtained a master’s degree in philosophy and classics from Dalhousie, and taught in an interdisciplinary humanities program at the University of King’s College. He has taught labour law at Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law.
Daniel enjoys cooking, music, reading, and spending time outdoors with his two young children. Asaf Rashid is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and primarily practices criminal defence law. He also offers services in immigration and prison law. He is licenced to practice law in Nova Scotia and has practiced in Ontario.
Asaf grew up in Fredericton, New Brunswick, where he graduated from the University of New Brunswick Law School in 2017. In 2017, he received UNB Law’s “Gordon Petrie Award” for Labour and Employment Law. He has a Master of Environmental Studies degree from York University, where his paper “Compromising the Environment? The Spruce Budworm, Aerial Insecticide Spraying, and the Pulp and Paper Industry in New Brunswick”, was published. He also has a Bachelor of Sciences from the University of New Brunswick.
Asaf is a member of the Nova Scotia Criminal Lawyers Association, the Canadian Prison Lawyers Association, and a member of the board of the East Coast Prison Justice Society and of OVO Cooperative Limited. Along with Dr. Jordan House, based in Toronto, Asaf is the co-author of Solidarity Beyond Bars: unionizing prison labour, published by Fernwood Press in 2022.
Asaf enjoys distance running, hiking, cycling, and kayaking. He has been a radio host on community radio stations, where he has done social-issues related programming in his spare time for many years between CKDU 88.1 FM in Halifax and CHSR 97.9 FM in Fredericton. Asaf hopes to one day resume the host’s chair. He has also been a long-time community activist in areas of housing, racial justice, migration, and labour rights. In his past, he has also dabbled in theatre.
Maegan was born in Newfoundland and married a Newfoundlander. While building her career, she has had the opportunity to work in various locations across the country because her husband works for the Department of National Defence.
