Shawn Scott
Senior Legal Counsel and Founder of Brookshire Law Office
Shawn A. Scott was born in Wolfville, Nova Scotia in 1963. He grew up in St. Margaret’s Bay and graduated from Sir John A. MacDonald High School in 1981. He went to Acadia University for his undergraduate degree which he completed at McGill University with Honors as a Faculty Scholar (1985).
He then obtained his Master’s Degree in Religious Studies at McGill University (1988). He went on to receive his law degree (Juris Doctor) from Queen’s University (1995). He was grateful to have the opportunity to return home to Nova Scotia. He completed his Articles with Kim Richardson, Richardson’s Law Office, and was called to the bar in November 1996.
Shawn has extensive experience in business development and in the practice of law. He founded Teryl Scott, Lawyers Inc., with his sister, Lisa Teryl. Later, in keeping with his entrepreneurial spirit and interest in business development, he went on to establish his own firm, Brookshire Law Office and is proud of the high-performing team that serves his clients.
Personal Experience

Shawn has lived in Bedford, Nova Scotia for over two decades with his wife, Greta who immigrated to Canada in the 1960s from England. In his spare time, Shawn plays guitar and banjo in the country and western fiddle band, The Wheelers. The Wheelers band members are a collection of lawyers from Brookshire Law Office, Teryl Scott Lawyers Inc, and Richardson’s Law Office – Shawn’s mother also joined the band and plays the piano. They began volunteering to perform in local nursing homes when Shawn’s father was admitted to White Hills Nursing Home. Shawn is also a history buff and is working on a book about Nova Scotia history in the 1700s.

He has published an article in the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society entitled “Noel Doiron and the East Hants Acadians” (2012). Along with his brother, Tod Scott, he developed a history series entitled “The Heroes of Hants County” to promote tourism – their father’s birthplace – which is on display at the Burntcoat Provincial Park in Hants County. He had a film short shown at the Atlantic Film Festival entitled “The Mariner of Minasville” on a child soldier from Hants County that fought in the American Civil War (2005).
Alan Freckelton
Senior Legal Counsel

Alan is widely published in the area of immigration law. He currently has published 17 scholarly articles on this topic and has written a textbook on Australian immigration law. He is licensed in Nova Scotia and has practiced immigration law in British Columbia, New York and his native home of Australia.

He obtained undergraduate degrees in Economics and Law at the University of Sydney. Alan passed his Canadian National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) law exams and relocated to Canada with his family in 2010. He completed a research project for the ANU and UBC in 2010-11, dealing with the regulation of the migration advice profession in both countries. He then obtained his Masters’ degree in Law at the UBC in 2013, sat the Ontario bar exam, and was admitted in Ontario in June 2013 and transferred to BC in October 2013.
Personal Experience
Away from work, Alan is married to Vikki, with seven children aged between 32 and 12. Their children reside in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, and in Canada between Vancouver and Halifax. Alan has an encyclopedic knowledge of Australian cricket, is an amateur science buff, and plays guitar (reasonably well after 34 years) and cello (still a learner after three years).
Daniel Wilband of Brookshire Law Office
Daniel Wilband
Employment Lawyer

Daniel Wilband works for Teryl Scott Lawyers Inc. which is associated with Brookshire Law Office. Daniel’s main focus is employment and human rights law. He has extensive experience with both non-unionized and unionized/collective agreement matters, constitutional law and complex human rights issues.

Daniel hails from the outskirts of Saint John, New Brunswick. He is fluently bilingual and his wife Michelle is Acadian from the same area.  Daniel attended McGill University’s Faculty of Law, arguably Canada’s finest law school, graduating on the Dean’s Honour List in 2015. He completed his articles at a well-known law firm in Toronto that specializes in labour/employment, constitutional and human rights law, after which he served as a clerk to the judiciary at the prestigious Court of Appeal for Ontario. Prior to law school, Daniel obtained a master’s degree in philosophy and classics from Dalhousie, and taught in an interdisciplinary humanities program at the University of King’s College. He has taught labour law at Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law. 

Personal Experience

Daniel enjoys cooking, music, reading, and spending time outdoors with his two young children. He plays guitar and clawhammer banjo, and is the newest member of the Wheelers– the firm’s country and western fiddle band. The Wheelers band members are a collection of lawyers from Brookshire Law Office, Teryl Scott Lawyers Inc, and Richardson’s Law Office.

Kate Frith
Clerk

Kate is originally from Toronto, Ontario. She pursued her undergraduate education at the University of Guelph, where she completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) in Marketing Management. Afterward, she took a few years off school to explore business development and management roles before attending law school. She received her law degree (Juris Doctor) from Dalhousie University’s Schulich School of Law in 2023 and is excited to be setting down roots in Nova Scotia. 

Personal Experience

In her spare time, Kate enjoys horseback riding and spent 20 years competing in the Hunter/Jumper and Dressage rings in Ontario. Her horse is now enjoying his retirement in Porters Lake, Nova Scotia. If Kate is not at the barn she can be found hiking with her partner on one of Nova Scotia’s many beautiful seaside trails.

Maegan Field
Controller
Maegan joined our team with a significant amount of experience in accounting and administration. She graduated with her business administration degree from Memorial University in 2009 and attended St. Mary’s University in 2010 to further her accounting education. She has played on the women’s basketball team for Memorial University of Newfoundland and St. Mary’s University.
Personal Experience

Maegan was born in Newfoundland and married a Newfoundlander. While building her career, she has had the opportunity to work in various locations across the country because her husband works for the Department of National Defence.

Barbara Brady
Office Manager and Receptionist
Barb worked hard to build a career in accounting and administration. Even though being an Office Manager at a law firm is new to Barb, she is determined to be the positive light, as the first point of contact at Brookshire Law.
Personal Experience
Barb Brady was born in Brantford, Ontario as the youngest of three. Her two older brothers gave her tough skin and a love for hockey. Barb met her husband, Ross, at a young age and together they have 3 loving children of their own. When Ross joined the military they moved east and quickly built roots. Barb has moved often with Ross and her children due to the military lifestyle.
Jason Conrad
Chartered Accountant

Jason Conrad works for BVCA and is the Chartered Accountant for Brookshire Law Office. He brings to Brookshire, full service accounting, tax and business consulting services.
